Summary
The Virtual MX (vMX) is a virtual instance of a Meraki Security & SD-WAN appliance, designed to deliver the same simple configuration and management benefits of site-to-site Auto VPN for customers operating or migrating IT services to Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) environments.
A virtual MX is deployed on an AWS EC2 instance or an Azure Virtual Machine (VM) and configured through the Meraki Dashboard, just like a physical MX device. It functions as a VPN concentrator, enabling secure and seamless connectivity between cloud and on-premises networks.
Establishing an Auto VPN connection to a virtual MX is like creating a direct Ethernet link to a private datacenter. The virtual MX supports up to 500 Mbps of VPN throughput, providing sufficient bandwidth for mission-critical IT services hosted in AWS or Azure — such as Active Directory, logging, or file and print services.
Connections to a virtual MX also benefit from the same SD-WAN capabilities as physical MX appliances. With Dynamic Path Selection, the virtual MX ensures optimal traffic routing whether data is directed to traditional servers in a datacenter behind a physical MX or to virtual servers behind the virtual MX.
